Rotatary Youth Leadership Academy ( RYLA)
The Hutchinson Roatary board approved the application of two of our Junior Rotarians, Emma Barnett and Katlyn Meggers, to attend the Rotary Youth Leadership Camp (RYLA) at Southwestern College on June 4-8. The Hutchinson Roatary Club will pay the registration fee of $275 per person for these two outstanding young women.
Emma Barnett is currently a sophomore at Hutchinson High School. Her mother, Dorothy Barnett, was a former Rotarian. Emma is a Junior Rotarian and she was the key student/friend responsible for hosting Mayara Salha, Brazilian exchange student, while she was at Hutch High this past January-March. Emma has also expressed an interest in a short-term exchange to Brazil through Rotary International.
Katlyn Meggers is currently a sophomore at Hutchinson High School. She attended RYLA last year and had a very positive experience which she would like to repeat this year. Her parents are Scott and Sheila Meggers. Scott owns a landscaping business and Sheila is a teacher at the high school. Katlyn has been a very responsive Junior Rotarian, always eager to get involved in a more meaningful way. She too played an important role in welcoming/hosting Mayara Salha into Hutch High.

50,000 meals packaged at Hutch for Haiti Event
After three solid months of planning and fundraising, Cottonwood Court was buzzing on Event Day, April 16, 2011. The mood was light-hearted and festive with tropical music booming from speakers as volunteers packaged meals, letting out cheers whenever a box of food was filled and ready to be placed on a pallet for shipping. Anyone who participated will tell you it was a moving experience and one that the Rotary board is considering doing again.
As of the morning of the event we had raised $40,000. Numana projected, based on earlier events, that we would probably be able to raise another $3,000 on event day, but brought enough food supplies to equal $45,000 or 150,000 meals. We actually raised over $7,000 on event day with sales of Hutch for Haiti shirts and donations that came in all day long. Donations are still trickling in.
As of Thursday 4/28, Hutch for Haiti has raised $47,826.62. We packed $45,000 worth of meals and have elected to pay forward our excess funds of $2,826.62 (and any other donations that continue to come in) to the McPherson Numana packaging event to be held in June.
Thank you to all who helped to make this event successful. It is a shining star for Rotary and will have a positive lasting effect on the Hutchinson Community and the people of Northern Haiti. Special thanks to Rotarians David Planthold, Josie Thompson, Monica Bergmeier, Ed Maschler and Pattie Yates Beldon who spent many long hours trying to inform, educate and organize the community to make this event happen. We took a ton of pictures at the event. You can see them posted on Hutch for Haiti's Facebook page.
Numana is continuing with their mission to save the starving with other packaging events in our area. If you didnt get a chance to make it to Hutch for Haiti, or if you did and want to join the fun again, we encourage everyone to volunteer at the McPherson packing event to be held at McPherson College Sports Arena on June 4th. January 2011
The Hutchinson Rotary Club will sponsor Hutch for Haiti food packaging event.
January 13, 2011, one year and one day after the devestating earthquake hit Haiti, we kicked off the "Hutch for Haiti" campaign with our first community meeting. About 30 people, including 10 Rotarians, responded to the invitation to help organize the project.
Numana presented information about the project and attendees took part in a practice round of meal packaging to get a feel for what the April 16th Community Packaging Event will be like. Attendees were also given the opportunity to sign up for 13 different committees that will be integral to pulling the event together. We are thrilled about the initial response we are getting from community members and feel the planning is off to a great start.
If you were not able to make it to this meeting, but would still like to be on a committee, it is not too late. Just contact hutchforhaiti@gmail.com or call (620) 259-9511.
Since Rotary is sponsoring this community-wide event, we will have regular updates on the progress of the event in our newsletters. Look for more information on our upcoming website and details on where to sign up to help package meals on April 16.
October 2010
The Hutchinson Rotary Club was approved for two District Service Grants:
First was for $4,000 total dollars. That includes $1,000 from the club; $1,000 match from the District; and $2,000 match from the Tree Board’s “Trees for Tomorrow” program to help replace trees in the Pyle Park across from city hall. We’re getting our dollars to stretch 4 times, helping beautify the city, doing some education with the local school down there, and just plain making a difference in the community.
Second was a match for the “Honor Flights” program through Central Prairie Honor Flights. The District can only match us at the 83% level for the 2nd grant as they had more requests than dollars for the first time (including those second grants that many clubs applied for and received). We had applied for $975 so that, with their match, we’d be able to send 3 veterans at $650 each. The 83% limit just means that we’ll have to provide an extra $232 to ensure that we send three veterans. We will be passing the hat once more at the next meeting to try to raise the remaining money.
